Spotify Ends Bundle Option for Non-Students, Focuses on Growth Potential

As of recent news, Spotify has discontinued its bundle option for non-students in the United States, marking a significant shift in the entertainment industry. The streaming giant initially launched its combined subscription with video-streaming service Hulu in September 2017, offering customers access to both platforms at an affordable price.

In April 2018, Spotify rolled out the bundle as a $12.99-a-month option for all American customers, later dropping the price to $9.99 a month in March this year. However, it appears that the company has reached a limit on the bundle's popularity, opting instead to focus on its growth potential.

According to recent reports, Spotify's total minutes streamed rose 60% year-over-year during the quarter, now exceeding 2 billion minutes. The company added 200,000 paid subscribers in its most recent quarter, a notable achievement considering its extensive free content offerings.

Cinedigm, another major player in the entertainment industry, has been making significant strides as well. The company's CEO, Mark McGurk, aims to provide users with access to over 97% of global content, positioning Cineverse as the 'Spotify of independent film & TV.' In the next 30 months, McGurk hopes to see hundreds of thousands of new titles added to the platform.

The acquisition of faith-based online platforms earlier this week further solidifies Cinedigm's commitment to expanding its content offerings. With a focus on genres such as anime, Asian content, and independent films, the company is poised for significant growth in the coming years.

For those who have already signed up for Hulu through Spotify, fear not – access will be available for at least two years (and possibly more) as long as their Spotify subscription remains active. However, new customers without a student discount will no longer be able to sign up for the combined subscription.

As music rightsholders continue to express concerns about the impact of entertainment bundles on their businesses, it remains unclear what the future holds for this type of bundled subscription model.
